Dr Brian McKaig

Board Member and Chair of Clinical and Professional Leadership Group
“I remember starting as a consultant and having regular meetings with GPs where you got to know them on a personal level. That made a huge difference in terms of how you could help support each other and understand each other’s pressures. OneWolverhampton gives us the opportunity to redevelop those relationships so we can provide more seamless care for patients.”
Born in Scotland, Dr Brian McKaig qualified at Glasgow University in 1991, before moving to Nottingham where he trained as a gastroenterologist.
In 2002, he was appointed as a Consultant at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and has held several managerial roles before securing his current role, as Chief Medical Officer in 2021.
As well as being a member of the OneWolverhampton Board he is also the Chair of the Clinical Professional Leadership Group for the partnership.
He is extremely passionate about training, leadership and service development.
One of his main focuses is to build on the relationship between primary and secondary care. This includes re-establishing forums where healthcare professionals can have meaningful conversations about the delivery of care and work together to provide more seamless approach for the people of Wolverhampton.
He would like to see the development of a clear programme of research that uses data and local intelligence to answer the questions that the population of Wolverhampton pose and use this to drive improvements in primary and secondary care.
Developing a digital knowledge and digital expertise within communities, to reduce disparities and provide a more accessible and fair system, based on local needs is also high on this agenda.
Finally, he is keen to establish an education programme to enable better learning between primary and secondary care, recognising they have a lot to learn from each other. In his spare time Dr McKaig enjoys watching and taking part in sports which includes regularly cycling to work.
